they don't want to protect these companies per se, they want to protect their lives against any change that might negatively affect them.

and because they aren't currently impacted in a negative way by the insurance companies (primarily because they tend to have a very limited scope of what actually affects them) they see no need to put their way of life at risk for the sake of changing it.
