i always just decide that the tree is a christmas gift to the cats.

i have a few ornaments i'd be pretty upset if they got broken, so they go near the top and are *really* secure.
i've also been known to tie the tree to something behind (ie: eye hook screwed into the bottom of a window ledge, etc) it so it can't be toppled.
