Advice: any good photo library program?

I have hundreds and hundreds dumped in my hard drive, and it's pretty unnavigable. I have them grouped in folders depending on what date I took them, but I really need to put my collection in order since it's only going to get worse with time.
Tried Picasa, but didn't really like it.
I don't mind if it's not freeware, as long as it keeps my collection organized and searchable and it has a good interface.

Well, I use Flickr, but that's not what you're looking for. Once someone told me how to use iPhoto without duplicating photos, I started using that ..
