My theory is that the US pulled some strings and got OPEC to go full-throttle with oil production, causing the price drop ...

Sort of a pre-bailout bailout.
Responses:
the price drop is largely demand driven. when people start scaling back growth forecasts in asia, europe and the us it doesn't take....
