Issues like this feel like they're an offshoot of the very human notion that we're supposed to be complete masters of our environment.

We've made so many advances that it's easy to feel like we should be able to control all aspects of it, and that gives us a feeling of power. When we lose that power, it's scary and we try to find a reason why. "People are still dying of [x]? How can that be? It must be [y]." And it's not just in medicine. You see that in social issues as well (though those can often be easier to fix, and are more self-caused).
