What really works is that they now have enough shows that they can stagger them and be running something

If they tried to go "network" and program a single night with all new programming, they'd lose viewers.
The only reason Psych/Monk work on Friday is because it's Friday, the worst or second worst night for network viewership.
They can run 16 weeks of Burn Notice, 16 weeks of Psych, 16 weeks of Royal Pains and 16 weeks of White Collar and cover 64 weeks w/o overlap. Overlap them a little and you have new programming every week of the year.
