Warner announced they'd be dropping HD DVD (pretty much killing the format) at CES in January.

I personally wouldn't call HD DVD a "mistake" as they still work and will continue to work so long as the discs don't get fried or the player doesn't explode. Eventually, the format will be trumped by a better format, but that better format will equally trump Blu-ray. Until then, both Blu-ray and HD DVD play 1080p/60 high definition video.
