how do you set the camera up? on P or manual? what is your 'film' speed or ISO?

normally a camera will set the shutter speed to max flash sync speed, don't know why cause the usual situations you need flash you also could use a slower shutter speed to capture some background ambient light level. I usually set the flash to be a fill light and this puts the balance of light on the natural or ambient levels, the flash will still freeze the subject, usually enough, but you will have detail and 'full fleshing out' of the rest of the image.
