The snow/cold as a sort of character in its own right (this really doesn't happen in the book but it's something that when done well in film, really works).
The hedge maze (I thought the hedge animals were pretty dumb.)
The subversion of expectations all over the place (i.e. Dick's fate)
The not happy ending tacked on (that felt awfully Spielbergian of Steve in the book)
I recorded the film to watch again, and I know I've mentioned some personal reasons for finding it really scary, but I think it's a masterpiece of filmmaking. I feel that way about all of Kubrick's stuff I've seen, though.
