I think Nate's got it right. People stopped showing up at the polls when it was clear Obama was gonna win.

The Republicans stayed home. That's already clear from the analysis that showed that turn out did not change over 2004 (only WHO turned out was different). So with the Republicans sitting on their hands, the Democrats were all that was left. And once it was clear Obama was going to win, they stayed home, too.
