Record turnout in off-year elections may be in the cards for Maine, thanks to Question 1 (gay marriage)

In 2003 turnout was 50.9%. The Secretary of State's office was expecting a 35-40% turnout, but the morning rush was heavier than expected, and hasn't slowed at major polling places through the day. South Portland has been busy all day; through 4pm Bangor had votes and absentee ballots from close to 11,000 people out of 22,500 registered.

Heavy turnout should favor the No on 1 campaign, but we'll see. Polls close at 8pm.
