People do want healthcare reform. People don't want a public option. Obama is trying to push that unpopular idea though. Plus, there's no denying people soured on Obama's healthcare plan. Yet, he continues to push for it.
I'm sure if you polled people and asked if homosexuals should have civil rights, most would say yes. Yet, if you ask them specifically about gay marriage, the vote would swing the other way.
My point was about degrees of support. If he agreed as strongly with gay marriage as he does healthcare reform as he's laid out, he'd be campaigning for gay marriage right now.
