This is just a throwaway note at the end of this article, but how is the roster change not a bigger deal? (link)

"With CF Melky Cabrera "very limited" due to a mild left hamstring strain, the Yankees received MLB permission to replace him on the roster, adding utility INF Ramiro Pena. That allowed Jerry Hairston, the other backup infielder, to be used in the outfield."
Don't teams set rosters basically in concrete before a series starts? How is it that the Yanks get to change the roster because one guy got hurt? The Mets didn't get to change their roster when El Duque tore his calf the day before the divisional series started in 06. That MLB is allowing the Yanks to do this seems patently unfair.
