normal gay people and your effeminate son or masculine daughter might not live a screwed up life in the closet.
It sorta like when Whoopi said she didn't mind that the only black person on Star Trek was a glorified secretary, it meant that it was normal for black people to be a. alive in the future and b. working along side folks of various cultures.
soon every show had a token black person and while tokenism is not a good thing, what happened was that it made it easier to hire and/or appoint people of color to positions of responcibility, power and professionalism, it no longer looked weird because we saw it and accepted it on TV.
gays in the public are marginalized and if we are to believe that ... how many are gay? 20% I mean AFAIK, no way, right? then a fuck of a lot of gays are hidden. I mean in Iran the pres can claim there are no gays there because they kill'm literally so you know they are well hidden in their closets.
the xian talaban really fears normalizing them because fundy religions require they turn people into self loathing fearful of their own instinctive desires, whether hetro or homo, remember sex for anything but procreation is sinful (so you are ALL sluts from hell) because that causes guilt and a sense of sinfulness,
I don't think its a coincidense that so many arch conservatives turn out to be deeply closeted gays that refuse the label even when arrested for having a wide stance or a lot of credit card charges to a gay massuse/meth dealer.
