When you basically buy the top talent with no concept of what constitutes a successful team...sure it can be.

the Yankees in the last 6-8 years had team-building all fucked up.

Old pitchers (Kevin Brown, Randy Johnson, Clemens) and old one-dimensional hitters shoe-horned into ill-fitting defensive positions (remember the 3 DH's with Sheffield/Giambi/Matsui/Posada).

Steinbrenner built the 2000's Yankees like he was building a fantasy team.

This year, they got a real 1B who can play defense, got a in his prime pitcher and helped clear the logjam of redundant players.
