They aren't being persecuted. Vilified yes, but persecution is not the correct word.

I come from a state where it was once illegal for Mormons to vote. That was persecution.

When the Mormons were attacked in Nauvoo, IL and Joseph Smith was killed by a mob, that was persecution.

When they were forced to flee Missouri to Utah, that was persecution. When the US Government sent an army under Johnston towards Utah, that was persecution

this ain't persecution
