ugh, as if my sister needed any more trouble in her life, her house was burglarized yesterday, by her neighbors...

She came home to find her neighbor in her front yard claiming his dog had gone through the fence and was running around her house. And it was, so she went in and got it out. Then about 15 minutes later went looking for her laptop, couldn't find it, started looking around the house and realized other things were out of place, dresser drawers pulled out and rummaged through, cables to the tvs unplugged, etc.
So she called the police and they came out pretty quickly. She had her laptop, the kids DS', a camera, camcorder, and $1,000 in cash (which I had just lent her) stolen. She also discovered that her extra set of house keys was missing, so even though she'll be out of that house in a month or two we had to pay to get all of the locks changed, and a friend and I pulled guard duty there last night.
The police believe the neighbor was acting as a lookout for whoever (probably one of his friends) was actually in the house. He took off as soon as soon as my sister got the dog out of the house and came back after the police had left. My sister called them back and they came out to talk to him, and since he's on parole they were able to search his room in the house but they didn't find anything. Obviously he left to get rid of the stuff before the cops got there.
So, even though it sucks that my sister is losing the house it's probably a blessing in disguise with neighbors like this (the house on the other side is a gang safe house that the cops are always coming out to). The police officer said that they used to respond to two or three break-ins a month but now they're responding to two or three a day. Ridiculous.
