In all my years living in Boston I don't think anyone ever asked me what church I attend or talked about their attendance at church or at a church event in a way that made me uncomfortable. I always believed New England to be a religious area - there are churches everywhere. But my experience here is very different. When I first moved here I was more willing to express my non-belief when the subject came up. That resulted in many uncomfortable moments. Now I avoid the subject as much as I can and when it comes up I deflect as best I can. Some people here are positively *hurt* by my response - which is always as neutral as I can be. There are people I work with now that don't talk socially to me anymore because they know I don't believe. It's no skin off my nose but I would feel better if the subject had never come up. You never know when the cry of "witch" will arise. ;)
