There's an excellent article in the cuurent (or could be the last) Wired about vaccination

And one of the top doctors in the field.
And then an article last night (might have been the NYTimes) about how part of the problem is that most parents today have never lived through a major epidemic.
In the first the doc points out the percentage of protection with vaccines is well over 90%, while the percentage of protection without is considerably lower. And the death rate with the vaccines is very low (single digits) the death rate without is considerably higher. Especially with things like mumps, diptheria and rubella.
