pretty much all of Leviticus is just a guide to keeping a very small number of people dying off.

it limited infectious diseases of all sorts - sexual, food-borne, blood, etc.

the jews were whittled down to a handful and probably would have died of quickly if not for the somewhat revolutionary 'laws' about cleanliness.
