There was just too much. Entire scenes could've been cut out making for a much more focused (and watchable) movie. - spoiler -

For example, the old jazz men on the cruise ship? Every one of their scenes could've been left out. We've seen a giant wave knock over a cruise ship before, don't nned to see it again. The bit about the Vatican collapsing? Cool destruction but we'd already seen the same basic thing half a dozen time.
With some editing and restraint, I think it could've been a decently entertaining disaster flick.
