I saw it as the decision of a coach who knew his defense was done for the night.

I have little doubt that a punt leads to the same result.
He could either punt and watch Manning march Indy down the field for the winning drive, or he could go for it and try and win the game.
Any coach should do whatever he can to avoid putting Peyton Manning in a "two minute drill for the win" situation. Belicheck tried to do that, but he failed.
