I mean, I wouldn't do it, but it's a celebration of having a baby, quite possibly the most joyous moment of a person's life. I can't fault anybody for going overboard on that.

I can totally understand if you don't want to go, but I just don't think it's some violation of sacred baby shower ettiquette.
