If the radius of the circle is r, the diameter is 2r, so the length of the side of the square is 2r. The area of the square is (2r)^2 = 4*r^2. The area of the circle is pi*r^2, and then the ratio of the two is (4*r^2)/(pi*r^2), the r^2 cancels, and you're left with 4/pi = 1.27323954...
