Just answering your first question

Giving birth is a very personal and vulnerable process. The mom-to-be has enough on her mind as it is. She should choose exactly the people she wants around her to support her, whether in the hospital room or in the waiting room.

Yes, some may be able to ignore those in the waiting room. But others may feel something like the obligation of hosting those people. Any such anxiety that can be eliminated, the better.
