Star Wars had the benefit of an exponentially easier marketplace. Every theater in the country wanted to run it for a year. That doesn't happen now.

It was a different era with different box office rules. What Twilight did was show up in the wake of Buffy/Angel inspired derivatives and somehow evolve into a franchise that absolutely dwarfs its predecessor. The imitator became the blueprint over the original.
