First of all, a 5-5 tie works horribly for Russell. It's my understanding that he would have a 1 in 8 chance of going home if it remained tied. That doesn't work at all when you have an immunity idol. The same is true when he had a 3 or 4 in 8 chance of losing his potential numbers advantage. Plus, the person he wanted to get rid of would be one of two people sure to return.
And you have to consider his confidence that he would be able to find the idol again.
