The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that Jay Powell has been diagnosed with a broken bone in his right arm near his surgically repaired elbow. He will require surgery to repair the injury and will not play again this season. "It's a bad break, the big bone in the upper arm," Braves head trainer Jeff Porter said. "Neither Dr. [Joe] Chandler [Braves physician] nor Dr. Andrews, or myself, have ever seen this kind of injury happen after reconstructive surgery. It's uncharted waters."

Jay Powell left Friday night's game after throwing his second pitch of the ninth inning 15 feet high and wide of the plate, according to the AP. He fell to the ground, holding his right elbow and writhing in pain. "He was in tremendous pain," Atlanta manager Bobby Cox said. "He could barely walk the pain in his elbow was so severe." X-rays showed a severe elbow injury, Braves officials said. Powell underwent transplant surgery on the elbow on July 8, 2004, after injuring his arm the previous June while with Texas.
