and now the work computer is operational again.

hadn't tried it in a few hours (since I was flying). Took the battery out and re-seated it, plugged the computer in, and it loaded okay.

This is almost worse than it being broken still, because I have no comfort that the problem won't re-occur, possible when I'm traveling.
