It annoys me that the only real fix for this is to download the album as one big long track.

Mmm I think you can change that. In iTunes select the songs and in "Option" change to "Gapless Album"

The only album I have ever consider re-ripping to do this is Frances the Mute, because the gaps ruin it. -- nm
