He probably looked like every other school kid on the train, no reason to believe he needed help.

I ride two of the trains he rode on a regular basis and I didn't see a single sign about him. The article makes it sound like they were everywhere, I didn't see a single sign in Manhattan or Brooklyn.
I get off the stop after Bay Parkway three times a week, my mom lives in the same neighborhood as that kid, and I didn't see a sign anywhere in a station or on the street.
I'd bet the station agents that clean up tore them down every day.
