Do any of y'all have experience with handheld GPS devices for hiking, biking, etc?

My stepdad is looking to get one for my mom for Christmas, and wants my help so I don't get rooked, but Googling hasn't returned many current reviews/items/lists or what have you.
Responses:
I use them all the time for work. in my experience, garmin is far and away the best. I have a garmin oregon, and it's great.

I bought one years ago, used it until the first set of batteries died, and haven't looked at it since. No help, I'm sorry...
