As they say, "correlation is not causation".

One could argue that autism is a result of household pollutants, and (to poke fun at JackDawson's phrasing on B99-whatever) the autism occurred "but for the rain".
A more in-depth study would be required, though. Something that analyzed as much of the factual data as possible, and pulled patterns out of the ether. Everything from housing material (drywall, carpets/flooring, paint, insulation, plumbing, refrigeration/air conditioning, bedding material, clothes, education levels of parents, food intake, socioeconomic status, amount of time spent driving, whether there is a garage with a car inside it, birth order, etc - any one of those things could be a factor, and that's barely even scratching the surface of potential variables).
