It seems like as soon as the dad does something "bad", something bad happens to him. Textbook Karma.

But then the kid hasn't done anything, and the end makes it seem like he's about to die in the tornado.

I think it all goes back to the short movie about the jewish legend in the beginning: life doesn't always make sense and you can't explain everything

(Okay, it's not the most profound analysis but it's what I remember of my interpretation! :))
