However, were all of this happening in Canada, I would support bailouts.

I just think that the elements in the US that have clamored for "free markets" and "deregulation" need to see the full extent of those failings, so as not to repeat the mistake in the future.

Or, if the US economy crashes and burns, and then a superior economy emerges from the ashes ... then people like myself might be swayed into supporting the free market agenda.

However, I suspect the endgame of free markets is very similar to some of William Gibson's works (especially with regard to rampant corporate espionage and assassinations/kidnappings).
