He's can't hit. They already had a first baseman and CF that couldn't hit. How is he an improvement? In the field?

Gardner should be locked in at CF despite is lack of power at the plate. He won't be the typical AL CFer but he'll hit for much better average than Swisher and he's very good fielder with a gun for an arm.
I'm much more comfortable with Gardner than Swisher there.
As for 1st base, the Yanks need a guy that can hit and play the field well enough as not to hurt the team in the field. Swisher can play the field but he's a terrible hitter and as such is useless as an everyday 1st baseman.
