own insecurity within the Muslim world. But I don't know the history that well - I imagine there were times when Sunni and Shia nations managed to get along well, and times they didn't, just like with European nations that followed different variations of Christianity.
If Afghanistan, you'd probably only have to go back as far as the 1840s/50s when Russia was expanding across the steppes and British India was rubbing up against the North West Frontier
