Spock was put on the planet because it gave the best view of Vulcan's destruction.
The Enterprise witnessed the destruction of Vulcan and jettisoned Kirk close to the nearest Starfleet outpost. So it's plausible (to me) that they could be the same planet.
Now if you're aking about 'why that ice cave?' - fair enough :) But others will talk about the timelines trying to fix themselves etc
