they're on the same planet because Venom or whatever his name was just marooned Spock there and then engaged the Enterprise at the same location, so the same planet was the closest.

(shouldn't it be a moon to be that close to Vulcan where Spock could actually see the full destruction? and if there were a black hole the distance of Earth to the Moon, wouldn't it destroy the surface he's on too?)
