Spock Prime was there because the bad guy wanted him to see the destruction of Vulcan.
Kirk was there because Spock wanted him off the Enterprise and knew there was a Starfleet outpost on the planet that Kirk could get to.
So, this isn't two guys just randomly dropped on a planet who just happen to run into each other. The Starfleet outpost is why they are where they are on the planet.
Part of the "message" of the film is that these people, no matter what fate throws at them, are destined to be together, so even on a planet separated by a few klicks, these folks are going to find each other.
None of that bothers me. What *does* bother me is that the planet Kirk was stranded on seemed to be close enough to Vulcan to be a moon. When Vulcan went blooey it took up a big chunk of sky.
