I've settled on using avidemux at home I think. I record movies and such off broadcast TV and then convert them to a lower bitrate MPEG-2 with AC3

for MythTV (my ION board accelerates MPEG-2 nicely) and then sometimes to Xvid AVI for my Creative Zen
