In response to "so I'm writing a paper and I need a vague definition of "flame war" as it's used colloquially here. I'm sort of at a loss." by pilgrims and indians love mandy lane

I think there two distinct types of flame war

One is when someone gets an emotional button pushed by a comment and amps up the vindicitive verbage in a needless defense. I mean, half the time a comment is made without being that aware of how it might be heard in another world, we all sit in our own spaces surrounded by our own stuff and sometimes another person's comment can be like a brick thrown through our window.

I run a couple mailing lists and have a specific rule, that it is more important not to react to an insenstive comment as it is usually the reaction that is the actual match that flares up the fire. Its like someone farting in a small room, usually the person didn't mean it, but you can count on some jerk to start yelling ewe that stinks and makea big stink about it.

the other is intentional trolling where they make comments they know will get knee jerk angry responces

I would like to piont out that it is easier to become co-dependent in flame wars than it is to do so in a relationship

So, you fucking idiot, never take anything personal
