do they force a grading curve on the class?

when i was adjunct prof at law school, we were basically forced to give a couple As and a couple D/Fs per assignment, and then spread out the remainder across the curve, with a specific percentage that the average had to fall within for each assignment
the truth is there was usually a few papers that were clearly better than the others, and a few that clearly were not. the rest of them there wasn't much of a difference at all but you still had to call them "B" or "C" just to satisfy the forced curve
