The mother obviously doesn't even trust the story her son is telling her, so is going to this girl. She's under no obligation not to tell the truth.

The dude needs to admit to the truth, and maybe telling the mother will help in the long run.
I say she tells her over lunch or something - not through email that's forwardable and copy-paste-able.
