It's very slow paced, and yes very liberal. Beaverton is great I lived there for awhile.

I moved up here from California for the same reason. Couldn't afford the cost of living and the pace of life was way to fast.
Then my Brother moved up here to go to OSU, and didn't want to move back to California when he graduated.
Then my Sister moved up here.
A lot of people that visit end up moving here.
Mild Winters, and Mild Summers. The lack of extremes and the green trees all over make it a great place to live.
In Portland you are and hour and a half from the beach and an hour from the mountain for skiing. You have rivers, and lakes for fishing and boating.
Great healthcare, with OSU on the cutting edge of new medicine.
Downside would be only one professional sports team (but be a Beaver or Duck fan and you get your football fix)
It's truly paradise really.
