to elaborate a little: the racism is a weird one, in that people seem totally blind to it. summed up perfectly by what a friend said a while back.

"I don't think people here are really racist anymore, but we need to seriously think about why we're letting in so many asians and muslims."
I don't have much experience with the east, but that's a very prevalent attitude around here.
