Spending the crystal will give you a pre-detemined amount of research point, but not necessarily enough points to complete a research.

For example, I need 1.5 million research points for my next military upgrade. I currently have 900,000 points, and I can buy another 200,000 points for 250,000 crystal, but it won't complete the research.
