You need more info to answer east/west. You need no more info to answer north/south.

Some people did east/west from where they were born. Other people did east/west from the International Date Line. You can also travel west to get to the furthest point east and vice versa. The question of north/south leaves no room for interpretation. You can only travel so far north and then you can't travel north any more. It's just interesting to me for some reason that north and south are absolutes but east and west are always relative.
