This is why I chose the religion I did, rather than one of the older ones. Sure, I'm very inactive religiously, but I am still a card-carrying member.

One of the core beliefs is that each major religion builds on the progress of the previous one.
Starting with Zoroastrianism and moving forward to Islam, it basically says that each religion (generally emphasizing the monotheistic ones) is a stepping stone towards humanity's spiritual development, and that a new prophet is sent by God every thousand years (approximately ... obviously muhammed and jesus were pretty darn close, in that context) with the goal of revealing the next step on the path.
