Because a gay person who hears someone say "that movie is gay" isn't defending *himself* or even his lifestyle.

If he gets in their face, he's just being pedantic about their word choice that doesn't relate to him in any way. Like you said, it's about intent. The person who said "gay" (likely) didn't intend to comment on homosexuality at all. It's meddling and condescending...
...which of course explains why you recommend it. ;)
